San-Trac | Sanitation Hackathon


The san-trac concept was started in Finland at the Aalto University as part ot the Product Development Project. Then taken onto the MoA Masters of Aalto. The prototype has been further developed at the UNICEF Uganda Innovation Centre during the Aalto Global Impact as part of the UNICEF Uganda, UNICEF Finland and Aalto University collaboration, and during the Sanitation Hackathon and the Sanitation App Challenge.

San-Trac was the winner of the 2012 Sanitation Hackaton in Kampala, Uganda (with the name Toilet-Trac at the time).

  • Hand-wash is a difficult subject to measure. People lie about it in surveys, and info is difficult to collect from rural areas.
  • Our solution provides reliable and realtime data about Handwash behavior and statistics.
  • Our solution also induces subtle behavior change by reminding users to wash their hands immediately when they use sanitary facilities.
  • Add lights in the toilet and a phone charging point to the Unit as an additional package. The unit is powered by solar energy, running 24h with a backup battery.

Our Approach:

  • Attach unobtrusive sensors in the Handwash Taps, Toilet Doors and Urinals.
  • Provide Audio alert for people exiting the toilet/urinal, reminding them to wash their hands before leaving.
  • Gather statistics from the tap/toilet/urinal and send them to a remote server.
  • View handwash behavior across multiple toilets from a central location and see how many people are using toilets and urinals, and how many are actually washing their hands.

The system is powered by solar energy. As an advantage a phone charger is also connected to the system where people can connect there phones for charging. The unit also has a night motion sensor light. It only lights when motion is detected around the Toilet.

The goals are to create a pleasant, safer, and approachable sanitary environment and to accelerate information gathering from remote areas.

San-Trac is the union of many available technologies, put together to create a new solution. It combines software and hardware, and is based on many different platforms.

  • Data is obtained with a remote monitoring system deployed in the field, based on Arduino – an open-source, low cost hardware system – and cheap sensors.
  • The installation at schools is combined with a solar lighting system. This not only provides energy for the monitoring unit, but also helps to make the environment safer and more pleasant.
  • Data transmission is based on SMS, widely available all over the world. During tests in northern Uganda, this proved to be a good solution with a considerably low cost.
  • Data concentration and analysis is made in a server that also provides a web interface for the public.

    • Benefit: Reminded to wash their hands whenever they use sanitary facilities, and thus not contracting nor spreading diseases.

    • Usage: Schools.
    • Benefit: Getting educated early about handwashing.
  3. Government Health Departments, NGOs like UNICEF
    • Usage: Aggregating data across schools and toilets.
    • Benefit: Tracking behavior and trends on hand washing practices.
    • Benefit: Preventing spreading of dangerous diseases by taking corrective action in places where handwash awareness is low or disease risk is high.
