1) We mapped all “open-defecation free” gram panchayats in India*. The map should allow the public to easily see where the open defecation problem is greatest/where the most progress is being made. The map – especially when combined with health and income data – may also help policy makers better target investments in sanitation.

2) We created data import functionality for the mobile app mSewage. This allows users to report on open defecation where they live (even without a reliable network connection). By crowdsourcing the identification of open defecation sites and sewage outflows, we can leverage the time and enthusiasm of local community members to produce sophisticated data on environmental contamination while promoting awareness of these issues. What’s more, the tool provides a mechanism to update/verify the Ministry’s data.
