Karachi water & Sewerage Board supplies 650 Million Gallon water per day to a population of  about 18 Million people. It manages a huge network of water and sewerage pipes. Water supply pipes that bring water from water treatment plant reservoir are regularly punctured by a water tanker mafia and install an illegal hydrant to fill water tankers which then sell the water to citizens at very high prices. This happens in the suburban areas of Karachi e.g. Hub river road, Manghopir road, Bin Qasim town, Landhi town etc and it takes two to three days to repair it once detected. The illegal hydrants not only cause pressure reduction in the distribution network, disrupt the distribution plan of KWSB but also cause financial losses. People are hesitant to lodge a complaint against these illegal hydrants for several reasons one of which is the distance of KWSB office from the suburban areas and for fear of taking on a powerful (tanker)mafia openly.
