ILLEGAL HYDRANT DETECTION AND INFORMATION IN KARACHI

Short description

A simple communication system with a GPS location through which citizens inform KWSB about illegal pilferage of water.

Crisis statement

Karachi water & Sewerage Board supplies 650 Million Gallon water per day to a population of  about 18 Million people. It manages a huge network of water and sewerage pipes. Water supply pipes that bring water from water treatment plant reservoir are regularly punctured by a water tanker mafia and install an illegal hydrant to fill water tankers which then sell the water to citizens at very high prices. This happens in the suburban areas of Karachi e.g. Hub river road, Manghopir road, Bin Qasim town, Landhi town etc and it takes two to three days to repair it once detected. The illegal hydrants not only cause pressure reduction in the distribution network, disrupt the distribution plan of KWSB but also cause financial losses. People are hesitant to lodge a complaint against these illegal hydrants for several reasons one of which is the distance of KWSB office from the suburban areas and for fear of taking on a powerful (tanker)mafia openly.

Needs statement

A swift communication system between consumers living in the areas where illegal hydrant is constructed and KWSB for warning KWSB when any such illegal activity is noticed by the citizen. A timely SMS or any other form of communication will enable KWSB to take immediate action and stop this work of illegal water hydrant.

Impact statement

The timely action of KWSB against illegal water hydrant will save millions of gallons of water being sold illegally that cause losses to KWSB and also brings bad name. The water saved through plugging illegal hydrant will improve the distribution plan of KWSB and will help in winning their citizens trust and confidence.
