Cameroon: Vote pour tes chiottes/ Vote for sanitation
In Douala, an app would get households to vote between two sanitation options
In Cameroon, access to improved sanitation is limited, reaching 39% of the population in the capital, Yaounde. Ownership of sanitation facilities is crucial in ensuring sustainability of access and use of sanitation facilities.
A project will construct will construct latrines (one latrine per house) and/or condominial sewerage (community based). Some areas will have the choice between the two (others won’t, due to technical aspects). The project wants to ask people to vote on which sanitation option households prefer.
We would need a tex-based app, which would (1) enable households to vote via text, which will be fed into a map of the area and a schedule, showing number and timeline of yes/no/no voting yet (2) send text messages to voters and non-voters alike, telling them the number of people from the community that have voted and the result (regularly).
Increased citizen participation will ensure ownership of facilities.
Potential to scale up to other urban areas and beyond the thematic area of sanitation
